The Search Square
For the search square at all levels the dog must search within the area marked out by four poles and retrieve to hand any articles it finds.
Articles will vary in size and difficultly according to the level being worked but dogs must be taught to pick up all textures, shapes, weights etc. within their capability.
Articles will be located by nose and not by eye, so even at the basic levels judges will try to ensure that articles are not clearly seen by dog or handler, it is therefore essential that dogs are taught to rely on their scenting ability and not their eyesight.
Searching is totally different from scent discrimination as taught for obedience and UK scent work and so trainers that have never taught searching before should seek help and advice on how best to teach this and handlers will need to work on searching away from class, at home, in their garden and even out on a walk to ensure the dog fully understands what is required.
